The Impact of Knee Injury Rates by Playing Position in Football

In football, knee injuries are among the most common and serious types of injuries, directly affecting a player’s career. The nature of movement, physical contact, and technical demands of each position lead to clear differences in knee injury rates.


For defenders, the risk of knee injury is often the highest. They frequently engage in one-on-one duels, tackles, and direct collisions with opponents. Sudden turns and changes of direction to stop strikers can easily damage the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Full-backs also face heavy strain as they constantly move up and down the pitch, which can overload the knee joint.


Midfielders are another group with a high rate of knee injuries. They must move continuously, participate in both attack and defense, and perform quick turns and short passes in tight spaces. Central midfielders, in particular, often endure strong physical challenges during ball contests, increasing the risk of knee damage.


Forwards generally face a lower risk compared to defenders and midfielders, but they are still vulnerable when sprinting, changing direction, or shooting inside the penalty area. Collisions with defenders can also cause ligament or cartilage injuries in the knee.


Goalkeepers, on the other hand, move less frequently, so their risk of knee injury is lower. However, they are prone to injuries when jumping, landing incorrectly, or colliding heavily during saves.


Overall, defenders and midfielders are the positions most prone to knee injuries due to constant movement and physical contact. Forwards face moderate risk, while goalkeepers encounter fewer knee injuries but remain exposed to specific situations. In other words, playing position determines the level of risk for knee injuries, and proper physical training, thorough warm-ups, and tailored preventive measures for each role are essential to minimize this danger.
